Alienated by Melissa Landers

The day before yesterday, I went to the mall with my best friends to celebrate one of their birthdays. The great thing about them is that they all love reading. Well, one of them is just a fan of Harry Potter and Divergent but I still count that. Towards the end of our shopping time, we went to the book store- because we would be crazy to leave without visiting. Walking around, my Harry Potter fanatic friend bought the Harry Potter Film Wizerdry book. The birthday girl got Champion- the last book in the Legend trilogy- and I jumped around like a girl meeting her favorite celebrity when I saw Alienated on the shelves. Of course I would get another copy of it... Aelyx and Cara were just begging me to pick the book up! So I thought it would only be fitting to write a book review for this amazing, loving, and suspenseful science fiction novel.
Alienated is one of my favorite sci-fi books about a girl, Cara, who has a L'eihr living in her home. Having Aelyx in her home will be a perfect opportunity for her to find out how the L'eihr live. But what she doesn't know is how hard she will fall for him... or the secret that he's keeping from her that may or may not destroy Earth. And on top of that, Cara is getting nasty and threatening notes in her locker from the kids at school that aren't so pro-L'eihr and the two of them have to be escorted to school by a police officer.  Tough choices have to be made and it seems to all rest on Cara and Aelyx.
If you are a fan of sci-fi and have never read this book, I highly suggest you do! From all of the books I have read so far, I have never read a book about an exchange student from another planet. Alienated is so original with a star-crossed love and a lot of suspense. It makes you want to keep on reading and leaves you begging for more.
SPOILERS:
Please do not continue reading until you have read the book:)
The thing I love about Cara is that she isn't afraid to have a passion about something and doesn't care if almost everyone else hates it. Cara is a strong girl and very smart. She is actually the smartest girl in school. With her whole life planned out, she's ready to have the first ever L'eihr coming down to Earth and sharing a house together. But she doesn't expect how attractive he is. And Aelyx definitely doesn't expect to start liking Earth.
Thinking that Earth was a terrible place, he and his friends plan on destroying it. But when he finds out he loves Cara and the Earth, it's too late to take everything back.
In Aelyx's planted, everything is dull. The same clothes, color, and hair. So when he comes to Earth, he sees everything as vibrant and intense. And tasting the food makes him want to throw up. Almost everything about culture is different. Even kissing.
The kissing scene in Aelyx's room is probably going to be my favorite part of the book. Cara and Aelyx are just starting to talk to each other more and realize that maybe they have feelings for each other. When they start talking about relationships. Aelyx shows Cara how the L'eihr show their affection and Cara shows Aelyx how to kiss. And when they do, it's like fireworks going off on the Fourth of July. Reading it just gave me butterflies because finally they realize they have feelings for each other!
But then Aelyx feels guilty about the secret he's been hiding. And when Cara finds out about what he did and that he kept it from her all this time, she feels so angry and disappointed. And I don't blame her. Loving someone that has started to destroy the world is mind-shattering. But since the book is two perspective, I can sort of see where Aelyx was coming from and I feel bad for him for losing Cara and trying to destroy the human race.
When Aelyx sacrifices himself to save Cara and the people on Earth, Cara realizes that she still loves Aelyx and doesn't want him to die. In the end though, Aelyx has to return to Earth to fix the alliance while Cara stays on L'eihr until he gets back. And it won't be until the next book, Invaded, comes out before we find out what happens to Aelyx and Cara.
To me. this book showed that no matter who you are, people make mistakes and if you fight hard enough, it's not too late to make it right. And it also showed that we humans are scared of something we have no knowledge of. We are afraid of the unknown and that's okay, but it makes most of us do things we might regret and sometimes the unknown isn't so bad as long as you give it the chance to be known.
Reading this book gave me a rollar coaster of feels. Love, confusion, suspense, sadness. And that is what makes a good book. When you feel something, it means the author did such an amazing job writing that you feel like you are with the characters, feeling the same things they are or just connecting with them. To me, knowing that you cry or the feeling of wanting to punch a wall is a good thing because that means a great character development.
Melissa did an amazing job with all of characters in Alienated and I cannot wait for Invaded to come out in February! I know it will be just as good:)

TTP Book Singing Experience

Today was the day. Waking up at 6:30 to go to Maryland and meet my favorite author in the entire world! I decided to wear my obsidian necklace in honor of the Lux series. I couldn't sleep last night and this morning I felt like jumping off the walls in excitement. Shiloh Walker was also there and I wanted to meet her, too!
My friend came with us to get Jennifer's signature and we talked about books the whole hour to Boonsboro, MD. The ride there was not long considering I was with a friend. There were lots of views of farms and mountains and rivers that were beautiful. The closer we got, the more jumpy I was. I was about to meet the person that wrote the books that made me fall in love with sci-fi. The one that wrote the Covenant series and currently writing The Dark Elements series along with Don't Look Back. All amazing books.
When we got to Boonsboro, the first thing I thought was a cute little town where everyone knew everyone else. Everyone we meet was so nice and sweet there. The line for the Turn The Page bookstore was already long so my mom and brother stood in line while my friend and I went into a vintage store that sold so many cute things. There was a really pretty mirror and a cute lace dress. Princess tiaras and rings with huge jeweled flowers on top. Mini bird baths. Tea sets. I honestly don't think I would buy anything I need in a vintage store but I wish we had more vintage stores where I lived so just so I can walk about and look at things.
Back in line, we went into the book store to get our books. It was so crowded in that little book store! It turns out there were a lot more adults and a lot less teenagers than I thought. All of the adults were there mostly for the Nora Roberts books and some for Jennifer L. Armentrout. While getting the Lux Beginnings and Consequences, a woman asked if it was worth buying the Lux series since she heard it was really amazing. Of course I told her it was more than worth it. I just got someone to be a Daemon Black fan!!!
While in line to check out (it was a line that literally weaved throughout the whole store) we met another girl that loves Jennifer L. Armentrout almost as much as we do. She noticed I was wearing an obsidian necklace and we talked about the Lux series and the Wait For You series.
After we checked out our books, we went to eat Subway for lunch and went back to the vintage store so my mom could check it out. Then we got back in line to wait until we could go back in and get our signatures and pictures. In line, I spotted Jennifer and that was probably the moment it sunk in that I was meeting Jennifer for the first time. Moving closer, Shiloh Walker signed my two books and my bag. Shiloh is really nice and friendly it made me smile:) And right next to her was Jennifer L. Armentrout.
She signed the three books I bought and talked about complimented my necklace I was wearing. When I told her it was obsidian, she said "See, I thought so." and showed me her obsidian ring she was wearing. Then, she told us about the Baltimore Book Festival she was attending. Marissa Meyer would also be attending so hopefully I can go! She took a picture with me and signed and complimented my bag.
The whole time I couldn't stop smiling. I just met Jennifer L. Armentrout. It was like I just met a celebrity. Well, she is a celebrity to me. I knew she is a great writer but Jennifer is also so nice and so down to earth. It's amazing she wrote a character like Daemon Black.
Going home, I read what Shiloh and Jennifer said and smiled when I saw just what they said.
I had such a great time going and meeting everyone there and I can't wait to meet them again! Waiting in the heat for more than an hour was so worth it!

Chameleon by Kelly Oram

Today starts my first book review:) Reading the beginnings of the Supernaturals series has so far been fantastic fantasy novel with a perfect dash of romance. Chameleon, the first book of the series, is a well written novel that makes you want to keep on reading and not stop until it is over. Dani finds out that she is more than just human. More than just any other supernatural. And instead of being almost invisible at school, she has two boys falling for her: her best friend and a boy who is destined to be with her. Kelly Oram has a way of writing that makes you see and feel the indecision in Dani's mind. The love. The hurt. The loss. The anger. You can picture what's happening in the book like you're watching a movie. Chameleon has a great storyline and a perfect group of characteristics in every person Kelly writes. If you haven't read this book, I highly suggest it to anyone that loves a great fantasy novel:)
SPOILERS:
Please do not continue reading until you have read the book:)
Dani is a strong girl for someone that has lived her whole life thinking she was normal. Learning that she isn't human and that the whole supernatural race wants her either dead or alive is life changing... literally. Choosing between her best friend and a guy she just meet but it supposed to be her true love is one tough decision, too. Dani must find a way to be what she was destined to be and find out who she can't live without. The things Dani goes through, all the lies and new discoveries she uncovers, is a huge weight to put on someone. Having to deal with all the betrayal and having to be strong at the same time is really hard and I admire her for being able to pull it off. I understand her hesitant feelings towards the council after everything that they have done to her. It might have been meant to serve a greater purpose, but severing her bond with Russ was such a cruel thing to do.
I honestly love Russ, but I am Team Gabriel one hundred percent. Russ is such an arrogant smart- aleck but so lovable, kind of like Jace Wayland but not as intense;) I feel bad for him because his connection with Dani gets severed and he can't love anyone else besides her. On top of that, his father has lied to him his whole life, but I feel like he doesn't have to take everything out on Dani. I get that he wants and needs Dani but you shouldn't hurt someone you love. When he doesn't get his way, he flips out. And that's a lot.
Gabriel is a really put together guy that makes you automatically respect him and want his respect. I think it's endearing how Gabriel talks so formally and how he doesn't know anything about the internet or dating. He is very straight forward with what he thinks. He's handsome yet so very gentle. How much he loves Dani is astonishing. Whenever he looks so surprised when Dani defends him, I always smile because I think it's funny how clueless he can be about how Dani feels about him. Reading about Gabriel made me fall in love with him right when Dani walked in the room and found him sitting in a corner.
The three of them have to work together to stop Russ' dad, Alex, from waking up the demon of Death. It takes a lot for the boys to work together but they somehow find a way. The resistance and the council are all looking for Dani and the boys and they have no idea who is in the visions that Dani is having. Finding out that Alex was behind the hood was a total plot twist to me. I didn't know who it was but I never thought that it would be Alex.
Everything happens so fast and yet you suck the story up like a sponge. The story takes a new and original twist on fantasy using cool abilities for the vampires, werewolves, fey, and the witches and warlocks. I cannot wait for the next few books to come out, Kelly! I'm sure that all of them will be just as great as this one:)
